How to make your own word search

1. Add your words. Paste one word per line, or use CSV to include a hint for each word.
2. Create your puzzle. Check the starting board size. All your words go on one board.
3. Find every word. Drag or tap across the letters to complete your puzzle.

Create a word search from CSV

Put the word you want to find in the first column and its hint in the second:

Find hund on the board; its hint is dog. The from,to header is optional. For hints containing commas, wrap the hint in double quotes. You can use translations, definitions or short clues.

For a word search without hints, choose Words and paste one word per line. Add up to 150 words. Every puzzle uses one board. If a list cannot fit, remove some words and try again. Boards default to a minimum of 11 × 11; open Input help and puzzle settings to choose a smaller or larger minimum. Boards grow when the words need more room, up to 31 × 31. Words must contain letters or numbers, with optional spaces or hyphens, and duplicate spellings are rejected.

How to play your word search

Drag across a word, or tap its first and last letters. Words can run horizontally, vertically or diagonally, in either direction. Found words are highlighted on the board and checked off in the word list.

Using a keyboard? Move with the arrow keys and press Enter or Space to select each endpoint. Press Escape to cancel. A little hint highlights the first letter of an unfound word.

Keep your progress

Your board layout and found words are saved in this browser when browser storage is available. Refreshing the page restores your game. Come back after a day and choose whether to continue or start again.

Shuffle board creates another arrangement of the same words and clears found words and time played. You will be asked to confirm if you have partly solved the puzzle. Start again also resets the puzzle. Saved games stay on this browser and device; clearing browser data removes them.

Learn your words

Choose Learn all words below your puzzle to create a private Learnalist list and add it for gradual learning and later review. Playing needs no account; saving for learning requires login. Your meanings are saved with the words. If only some words have meanings, words without one use the word itself on both sides of the learning card.
