Habit Loop Explained: Cue, Action, Reward
Habit Loop Explained: Cue, Action, Reward
The habit loop is a simple model:
- Cue: trigger that starts behavior.
- Action: the behavior itself.
- Reward: outcome that reinforces repetition.
Example habit loop
- Cue: finish lunch.
- Action: 10-minute walk.
- Reward: better energy and mental reset.
How to improve a weak loop
- Make cue obvious and stable.
- Shrink action until resistance is low.
- Add a clear immediate reward.
Why this matters for tracking
Tracking helps you spot where the loop fails:
- frequent misses may mean weak cue
- low completion may mean action too hard
- no pull to repeat may mean poor reward
