US history, 1789 to the present

US Presidents in Order: Timeline and Recall Practice

Follow every US president from George Washington to Donald Trump's second presidency. Practise matching names with years in office, or add the collection once for gradual learning and ongoing review.

47 presidencies, 45 people

George Washington was the first president. Donald Trump is the 47th, serving his second presidency. Grover Cleveland and Trump each appear twice because their two presidencies were separated by another president. Cleveland is numbered 22 and 24; Trump is numbered 45 and 47.

The cards follow that numbered sequence. Consecutive terms stay together, so Franklin D. Roosevelt has one entry covering 1933-1945. The dates are years in office, not election years. William Henry Harrison and James A. Garfield each served for only part of a single year, shown as 1841 and 1881 respectively.

Sources and conventions

The order, presidential numbering and years were checked against the US House of Representatives' presidential chronology. The Library of Congress chronology provides further reference material, including portraits. Where those tables split a presidency because the vice president changed, these cards keep the president's continuous service together.

Checked on 6 November 2026. “2025-present” records Trump's current presidency without assigning it a future end date. The six sections are study groupings, not official historical periods. This collection teaches names, order and years; use the linked sources to explore each presidency in more depth.
