A book to take home

You’ve found a book you want to read. Now you need to ask how borrowing works.

At the library desk

You came into the library to have a look. A cover caught your attention. You read the back, then the first page, and now you’re carrying it around with one finger keeping your place.

At the desk, you hesitate. Everyone else seems to know what to do.

You can begin with the book in your hand.

The same moment, a little more language

What would you say?

Start with what you know. Stay for something new. All three levels are here to explore.

All three levels, introduced gradually in order: A1 → B1 → C1. Earlier phrases return for review as you learn more. A free account is needed.

?

A1 · The essentials

Say it simply

Start with the book and a small request.

You don’t know the process yet. The person at the desk can help you begin.

A1 includes these 3 phrases.

English

Can I borrow this book?

Norwegian

Kan jeg låne denne boka?

English

I don’t have a library card.

Norwegian

Jeg har ikke lånekort.

English

Can you help me?

Norwegian

Kan du hjelpe meg?

Låne means borrow here. Denne boka is “this book”. Et lånekort is a library card. These questions don’t assume how registration works.

A small thing to try

Imagine holding a book at the desk. Ask to borrow it, then explain what you don’t have yet.

B1 · A little more language

Explain a little more

Say what you’d like and ask to be shown.

You’ve said hello. Now you can explain the situation and ask someone to walk you through it.

B1 includes these 3 phrases.

English

I’d like to borrow this book.

Norwegian

Jeg vil gjerne låne denne boka.

English

How do I get a library card?

Norwegian

Hvordan får jeg et lånekort?

English

Can you show me how to do it?

Norwegian

Kan du vise meg hvordan jeg gjør det?

Jeg vil gjerne means “I’d like to”. Vise meg hvordan asks for a demonstration. You can use the same pattern when you’re learning a new everyday process elsewhere.

A small thing to try

Think of a place where you don’t yet know the routine. Ask someone to show you what to do.

C1 · Tone and nuance

Make it sound like you

Explain the hesitation and invite a little guidance.

Du har rukket å bli nysgjerrig på hvordan historien fortsetter. Det er bare selve låningen du ikke helt har funnet ut av. Du holder fram boka og bestemmer deg for å si det som det er.
Read the scene in English

You’ve already become curious about how the story continues. It’s only the borrowing itself that you haven’t quite figured out. You hold out the book and decide to say it as it is.

C1 includes these 3 phrases.

English

I’m not quite familiar with how things work here yet.

Norwegian

Jeg er ikke helt kjent med hvordan ting fungerer her ennå.

English

Would you mind walking me through it?

Norwegian

Kunne du vist meg hvordan det gjøres, steg for steg?

English

I only meant to have a look, but now I’d really like to take this one home.

Norwegian

Jeg skulle egentlig bare kikke litt, men nå fikk jeg lyst til å ta med denne hjem.

Ikke helt … ennå softens the admission while leaving room to learn. Skulle egentlig bare introduces a plan that quietly changed. It lets you share a little of the story behind the request.

A small thing to try

Explain a small change of plan using “I only meant to …, but …”.

You put the book on the desk, still open at your page, and ask.

A note on levels and language

A1, B1 and C1 describe the focus of each section, not a test of your ability. You may recognise phrases at any level. These are teaching examples guided by the CEFR descriptions, not official ratings of individual sentences. The Norwegian uses Bokmål.

The scene teaches questions. Registration requirements and borrowing arrangements depend on the library.
