Clean sheets

You pull back the duvet and remember: you changed the sheets this morning.

At home, at last

The Marius pattern is familiar. The cool, smooth feeling underneath is fresh.

Earlier, changing the bed was another job to finish before leaving the house. Now you slide your feet down towards the end of the duvet.

For a moment, you’re quietly grateful to the person you were this morning.

?

A1 · The essentials

Say it simply

Name the comfort, then say goodnight.

You don’t need a whole account of your day. Just a few words from underneath the duvet.

A1 includes these 3 phrases.

English

The bed linen is clean.

Norwegian

Sengetøyet er rent.

English

I’m tired.

Norwegian

Jeg er trøtt.

English

Goodnight. Sleep well!

Norwegian

God natt. Sov godt!

Sengetøy means bed linen, including covers and sheets. Rent describes sengetøyet. Sov godt is something you can wish someone else.

A small thing to try

Imagine you’re heading to bed. Tell someone you’re tired and wish them a good night.

B1 · A little more language

Explain a little more

Share the small pleasure of a freshly made bed.

Someone asks why you’re going to bed so happily. You’ve remembered what’s waiting for you.

B1 includes these 3 phrases.

English

I changed the bed linen this morning.

Norwegian

Jeg skiftet sengetøy i morges.

English

Clean bed linen feels so good.

Norwegian

Det er så godt med rent sengetøy.

English

Now I’m going to snuggle under the duvet.

Norwegian

Nå skal jeg krype under dyna.

Skifte sengetøy is to change the bed linen. Krype under dyna literally gives the action a little crawl; in this scene, “snuggle under the duvet” captures the feeling.

A small thing to try

Tell someone about a small job you did earlier that you’re glad is finished now.

C1 · Tone and nuance

Make it sound like you

Let the pleasure carry a little personality.

Du hadde helt glemt at du skiftet på senga før du dro. Nå trekker du dyna opp til haka og tenker at den lille innsatsen i morges var ganske godt tenkt.
Read the scene in English

You had completely forgotten that you changed the bed before you left. Now you pull the duvet up to your chin and think that the little effort this morning was a rather good idea.

C1 includes these 3 phrases.

English

That was just what I needed.

Norwegian

Dette var akkurat det jeg trengte.

English

Clean bed linen is one of those small everyday joys.

Norwegian

Rent sengetøy er en av de små gledene i hverdagen.

English

I could happily stay here for a good while.

Norwegian

Her kunne jeg godt blitt liggende en god stund.

Kunne godt expresses willingness or pleasure here. Blitt liggende lets the sentence linger: you would remain lying there. The language can stay ordinary while the feeling becomes more precise.

A small thing to try

Replace the clean bed linen with another small pleasure. Say what it does for you without calling it “nice”.

Your phone can stay where it is. You’re comfortable now.

A note on levels and language

A1, B1 and C1 describe the focus of each section, not a test of your ability. You may recognise phrases at any level. These are teaching examples guided by the CEFR descriptions, not official ratings of individual sentences. The Norwegian uses Bokmål.

The Marius-pattern bedding is a detail in an imagined home. The illustration uses an original geometric textile motif.
