Moments · Learning Norwegian

The room is yours again

For a few minutes, everything is where it belongs. You sit down.

A clear corner of the table

The drying rack is folded away. The mugs have made it back to the kitchen. There is a clear stretch of table where a small mountain of things used to be.

You put your coffee there just because you can.

Someone comes into the room and notices.

A1 · The essentials

Say it simply

Notice the room, and enjoy being finished.

You’re sitting down when someone asks whether you’re done. For now, yes.

A1 includes these 3 phrases.

English

I’m finished.

Norwegian

Jeg er ferdig.

English

It’s tidy here.

Norwegian

Det er ryddig her.

English

Now I can relax.

Norwegian

Nå kan jeg slappe av.

Ryddig means tidy. Slappe av means relax. You can be finished tidying without having washed or scrubbed anything.

A small thing to try

Look around your room. Say whether it’s tidy, then say what you can do now.

B1 · A little more language

Explain a little more

Say what you’ve done and invite someone to sit.

The other person can see the difference. You can tell them about the effort and make room for a shared pause.

B1 includes these 3 phrases.

English

Now I’ve finished tidying the living room.

Norwegian

Nå har jeg ryddet ferdig i stua.

English

It’s so tidy in here!

Norwegian

Så ryddig det er her!

English

Shall we have a coffee before we carry on?

Norwegian

Skal vi ta en kaffe før vi fortsetter?

Har ryddet ferdig connects the finished task to the room you’re in now. Så ryddig det er her! is an exclamation: the word order differs from the question Er det ryddig her?

A small thing to try

Invite someone to take a break after a task. Say what you’ve finished.

C1 · Tone and nuance

Make it sound like you

Enjoy the peace without pretending it will last.

Du setter koppen midt på bordet, bare fordi det er plass. Det kommer sikkert snart en vott, en kvittering og noe ingen helt vet hvor hører hjemme. Men ikke akkurat nå.
Read the scene in English

You put the cup in the middle of the table, just because there’s room. A mitten, a receipt and something nobody quite knows where to put will probably arrive soon. But not right now.

C1 includes these 3 phrases.

English

It’s as though I can breathe a little more freely now.

Norwegian

Det er som om jeg kan puste litt friere nå.

English

Let’s enjoy it while it lasts.

Norwegian

Vi får nyte det så lenge det varer.

English

I’m not quite sure how long the table will stay this tidy.

Norwegian

Jeg er ikke helt sikker på hvor lenge bordet får være så ryddig.

Som om opens a comparison. Vi får can mean “we’ll just have to” or “let’s” in a lightly accepting tone. Får være playfully treats the tidy table as something the household might leave in peace.

A small thing to try

Describe something you enjoy even though you know it is temporary. Try a warm, amused tone.

The table will collect things again. Your coffee is still warm.

A note on levels and language

A1, B1 and C1 describe the focus of each section, not a test of your ability. You may recognise phrases at any level. These are teaching examples guided by the CEFR descriptions, not official ratings of individual sentences. The Norwegian uses Bokmål.
