How to Learn Norwegian by Reading

Choose Norwegian texts you can partly understand already. Read a short section, check the gaps that matter, and return to useful vocabulary later. As reading gets easier, try longer passages or less familiar topics.

You can start with a course dialogue or an article about something you know well.

Start with support

If you are new to Norwegian, try NTNU’s Norwegian on the Web, which provides texts with audio and vocabulary support. Read a few sentences, check what puzzled you, then read them again.

When you can follow a paragraph, try a short real-world text on a familiar subject. Our Norwegian reading websites guide covers news, reference material, and specialist interests.

Notice the written form

These examples use Bokmål. If that is what you are studying, start with texts that let you practise it consistently.

You will also encounter Nynorsk; NRK publishes both forms. Check which you are reading before adding an unfamiliar spelling to your vocabulary notes.

Try a short session

Here is a practice example:

Biblioteket er stengt på mandag. Du kan levere bøker på tirsdag.
The library is closed on Monday. You can return books on Tuesday.

Find the main message first. The word stengt tells you the library is closed; the days tell you when to visit. Once you understand it, decide what to keep. The phrase levere bøker may be more useful than levere alone.

Apply that sequence to a real page:

1. Choose a paragraph and a question you want it to answer.
2. Read once, allowing a few unknowns.
3. Check what prevents you answering the question.
4. Explain the point without looking at a translation.
5. Save a little useful language for later.

Mix easy reading with close study

Some sessions can focus on following a story. Others can examine one sentence: a verb form, a phrase, or an unfamiliar structure.

If grammar keeps blocking you, consult Norwegian sentence examples by tense. If the difficulty is topic vocabulary, try another piece on the same subject. Where audio is available, listen while following the text after your first reading.

Increase one challenge at a time

Try a longer text on the same topic, a short text on a new subject, or a familiar passage without its translation.

You are ready for more when you can summarise the point and return from lookups without losing the thread. If you cannot connect the sentences, return to a more supported text.
