Norwegian Websites for Language Learners

Start with NTNU’s Norwegian on the Web for supported reading, or Klar Tale for news in simpler language. As you grow more confident, try native material on a subject you already know.

Difficulty varies by article. Use these suggestions to choose a starting point, then try a paragraph before committing to the whole page.

Find your starting point

NTNU: supported first reading

Norwegian on the Web (NoW1) is open to learners beyond NTNU, with audio and vocabulary support.

Try From Oslo by train: short Bokmål sentences and a dialogue about names, origins, and family, with English support. Read a little before checking the English, then listen while following the text. The lesson was readable without signing in when checked.

Klar Tale: accessible news

Klar Tale publishes news with simpler wording and offers read-aloud options. The sampled text used short Bokmål paragraphs. Start with a story whose background you know; unfamiliar events still add difficulty. See how the publisher describes its approach.

The site has both open articles and paid items marked “pluss”. Check that you can access the full story before starting.

NRK: news you already follow

Try NRK for a short report about a place or subject you know. Names, quotations, and references to earlier events can make a brief story demanding, so judge it by the first paragraph.

Expect both Bokmål and Nynorsk. NRK explains its use of both written forms. If your course teaches Bokmål, check the written form before treating every unfamiliar spelling as new vocabulary.

Store norske leksikon: familiar topics

An encyclopedia lets you choose a subject you already understand. Try the introduction to Norge in Store norske leksikon, then one section that interests you.

The introduction is in Bokmål and was publicly readable when checked. Longer sections introduce more specialist language. Choose by subject knowledge as well as length.

kode24: reading for developers

If you enjoy programming, kode24 gives you a reason to read Norwegian. Expect technical terms and arguments that assume software-development experience.

The article in our Reader demonstration is a Bokmål opinion piece about development methods. It was publicly readable when checked. Choose it for interest in the subject, rather than as a first Norwegian text.

Try one paragraph
