Norwegian word choices
Hjem vs hjemme: going home or being at home?
Use hjem for home as a destination and hjemme for being at home. Try four everyday situations.
The difference
Hjem points towards home as a destination. Hjemme describes where someone is or where something happens.
Compare Jeg går hjem (I am walking home) with Jeg jobber hjemme (I work at home). The question is “where to?” versus “where?”.
It is about direction, not simply movement
You can move around while you are at home: Jeg danser hjemme means “I dance at home”. Use hjemme because home is the location of the dancing, not a destination.
The same pattern: inn/inne and ut/ute
Gå inn means go inside; være inne means be inside. Similarly, gå ut means go outside, while være ute means be outside. The exercise focuses on hjem/hjemme so you can practise one pair before extending the pattern.
See NTNU’s explanation of place and direction for the grammar behind this distinction. The situations and practice notes here are original examples.
