Hverdag or hver dag? The difference in Norwegian

You say you learn a little Norwegian every day. Then your friend mentions hverdagen, and you pause.

Over lunch with a friend

Your friend asks how the Norwegian is going. A little every day, you say, pleased that the sentence comes easily.

A few minutes later, they use hverdagen. You recognise the sounds, but the sentence is about life here, not how often something happens.

You put down your fork. “Is that the same as hver dag?” Now lunch has a small question worth staying with.

One word or two?

Hver dag means every day. The usual English translation of en hverdag is a weekday, and hverdager is weekdays. Hverdag can also mean everyday life; hverdagen is its definite form.

Be careful with the shortcut “Monday to Friday”. Bokmålsordboka excludes Sundays and holidays, so its definition can include Saturday. NAOB also records newer usage excluding Saturday. For an actual plan, ask which days the person means.

A1 · The essentials

Say it simply

Say that you learn every day, and ask about the word you have noticed.

You know hver and you know dag. Rather than nodding and carrying on, you ask about the word you have just heard.

A1 includes these 3 phrases.

English

I learn a little Norwegian every day.

Norwegian

Jeg lærer litt norsk hver dag.

English

What does “hverdag” mean?

Norwegian

Hva betyr «hverdag»?

English

It's an ordinary weekday.

Norwegian

Det er en vanlig hverdag.

Hver dag tells us how often something happens: every day. En hverdag is usually translated as “a weekday”. In en vanlig hverdag, vanlig means ordinary. The joined word also has the everyday-life meaning your friend has used. As explained above, the days included can depend on context.

A small thing to try

Say one thing you do every day. Then practise asking what an unfamiliar word means.

B1 · A little more language

Explain a little more

Check what someone includes when they say hverdager.

Your friend asks when you practise. Every day, including weekends, you say. Later, when you discuss meeting on hverdager, you check whether that includes Saturday.

B1 includes these 3 phrases.

English

I practise every day, including at weekends.

Norwegian

Jeg øver hver dag, også i helgene.

English

When you say “hverdager”, do you mean Saturday as well?

Norwegian

Når du sier «hverdager», mener du lørdag også?

English

No, in this case I mean Monday to Friday.

Norwegian

Nei, her mener jeg mandag til fredag.

Også i helgene explicitly includes weekends. Hverdager is the plural of hverdag, usually translated as “weekdays”. The answer her mener jeg means “in this case I mean”: your friend is clarifying this plan, not giving a rule for every use of the word.

A small thing to try

Imagine someone offers to meet on hverdager. Ask about Saturday, then give a precise answer using the days you mean.

C1 · Tone and nuance

Make it sound like you

Talk about the place Norwegian has in your everyday life.

Dere blir sittende og snakke om ord dere bruker uten å tenke over dem. For vennen din er «hverdag» helt selvfølgelig. For deg har ordet fått en ny side: det handler ikke bare om kalenderen, men også om livet du er i ferd med å bygge her.
Read the scene in English

You stay sitting together, talking about words you use without thinking about them. To your friend, “hverdag” is completely familiar. For you, the word has gained another dimension: it is not just about the calendar, but also about the life you are in the process of building here.

C1 includes these 3 phrases.

English

I'm trying to make a little Norwegian part of my everyday life.

Norwegian

Jeg prøver å få litt norsk inn i hverdagen.

English

Over time, Norwegian has become a natural part of my everyday life.

Norwegian

Etter hvert har norsken blitt en naturlig del av hverdagen min.

English

It's the little conversations in everyday life that make me feel more at home.

Norwegian

Det er de små samtalene i hverdagen som gjør at jeg føler meg mer hjemme.

Hverdagen can mean everyday life, with its routines and responsibilities. Etter hvert describes a gradual change. Det er … som … puts the emphasis on the little conversations: they are what help you feel more at home.

A small thing to try

Describe one way Norwegian has become part of your life. Use hverdagen, and add a particular place, person or routine.

You leave with a word for the days, and another way to talk about the life inside them.

Find hverdagen in a small everyday pleasure

A note on levels, language and sources

A1, B1 and C1 describe the focus of each section, not a test of your ability. You may recognise phrases at any level. The CEFR descriptions guide the progression from simple exchanges to more precise expression; they are not official ratings of these sentences. The Norwegian uses Bokmål. This is an imagined conversation.

Bokmålsordboka: hver gives hver dag as an example. Its hverdag entry and NAOB's entry support the meanings and Saturday qualification above.
